Why would you make your own engagement ring?

An engagement ring is one of the most meaningful pieces of jewellery someone will ever give. So much thought goes into making a proposal perfect, the location, the words, the moment, but what if the ring itself could be part of the story?

Traditionally, people visit a jewellery shop, or commission a jeweller to bring their vision to life. But some people choose to go a step further. They make the ring themselves.

My Make Your Own Engagement Ring Workshops give you a full day in my Winterbourne, Bristol studio, a fully equipped jeweller's workshop, where you'll bend and fabricate metal, solder each component into place, and polish the finished piece by hand. My Bristol engagement ring workshops are designed for complete beginners, so you don't need any prior experience to walk away with something truly beautiful. I guide you through every stage, and by the end of the day, you'll leave with a ring you made yourself, presented in a handcrafted walnut box laser-engraved with Made by Me.

Photos and videos are taken throughout the day, so the whole experience is yours to keep and share.

Here are five reasons people choose to make their own engagement ring:

1. It becomes part of the proposal story. It isn't just a ring, it's the moment you get to say, "I made this for you." With photos and videos from the day, you can share the thought and care that went into every detail. I often receive a message afterwards with a photo saying, "I've proposed!" and I love that I get to be part of that.

2. No experience needed. I've helped over 30 people make their engagement rings in my Bristol studio, and none of them had any prior jewellery-making experience. Some have hands-on jobs in engineering or love a bit of DIY, but many have no practical skills at all. I guide you through everything, and I check the ring is fit for everyday wear before it leaves the workshop.

3. It makes the ring incredibly personal. You choose the metal, the gemstones, and the design. People have requested florals, Celtic knotwork, even handwriting worked into the band. Every ring is entirely one of a kind, a reflection of your partner, not a standard design pulled from a display case.

4. The effort makes it more meaningful. You've put your time, patience, and effort into making something that will be worn every day. The emotional value of that is something no shop bought ring can replicate.

5. It's an experience you'll never forget. Most people arrive a little nervous. But once the first practice solder is done, something shifts, and by the end of the day, when they see what they've actually created, the excitement is something special. The workshop itself becomes a memory as much as the ring does.

Making your own engagement ring isn't just about the ring. It's about creating something meaningful with your own hands, and having the most extraordinary story to tell your partner, your family, and one day, maybe even your grandchildren.

I’m not local to Bristol. Is this still suitable for me? No problem, I’ve had people travel all over the UK to make their own engagement ring. If you would like a list of places to stay, please ask. When the ring is ready to hand over to you, I will post it by Royal Mail insured Special Delivery if needed. All packaging is discrete and completely unbranded, no one would know there is jewellery inside. I always notify you beforehand so you know exactly when you’ll expect your delivery.
